“Meir Panim” distributes 1,000 food shopping cards, resembling credit cards, which are used as a gift card at major food chain stores all over Israel. The card is worth £36 of groceries (excluding alcohol and cigarettes) each month.
This innovative project allows Meir Panim to provide food for needy individuals on a new level, while preserving their self respect, especially for those who are uncomfortable being seen accepting charity.

Of the 691,000 elderly populations in Israel, 28 per cent are survivors of the Holocaust. One quarter of Israel’s aged are immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Some 24 per cent of all elderly people live under the poverty line.
Scarred by the memories of the atrocities they endured during the Holocaust, living under communist regimes and in concentration camps, the aged population in Israel are now left to battle poverty alone, in a country gripped by ongoing conflicts.
To meet this growing need, Meir Panim, provides 1000 food shopping cards, to Holocaust survivors under the poverty line across Israel.
The food shopping card resembles bank cards and can be used as a gift card at major food chain stores. The card’s £36 worth of groceries each month (excluding alcohol and cigarettes) are valid for an entire year (the cards are distributed by Meir Panim branches throughout Israel).
This innovative project will allow Meir Panim to provide food for needy individuals on a new level, allowing its benefactors to preserve their self- respect.
Hopefully thanks to this initiative the survivors won’t have to make a choice between food and other expenses such as rent, medicine, heating and electricity.
