Meir Panim: Eliminating poverty among children, families and Holocaust survivors in Israel: 30 branches throughout Israel, over 1m meals a year for needy people, 1,000 food shopping cards for Holocaust survivors, six after-schools youth clubs serving more than 130 children a day, 9 warehouses for second-hand home appliances serving 500 people a month, , vocational training courses for the unemployed.
London, June 29, 2009. Former Chelsea FC manager Avram Grant revisited London last night a year after leaving his post, with not a football in sight. Grant was invited to appear as the keynote speaker at the launch of the UK branch of charity Meir Panim - talking about a more poignant subject, close to his heart - the Holocaust.
Meir Panim (in Hebrew: 'to bring a smile to someone's face') is the largest supplementary welfare services agency in Israel. Founded in 2001, it provides practical solutions to problems faced by Israelis living in poverty, whose ranks have swelled dramatically in recent years.
On an unusually warm Sunday evening, some 140 people, many of them young professionals, showed up to hear Grant at the Jewish Cultural Centre and to demonstrate their support for Meir Panim in the UK. Around £5000 was raised to help Holocaust survivors in Israel by providing them with Food Cards, which may be used at many supermarkets.
Grant’s father, Meir Granat, emigrated to Israel from Poland after surviving Nazi persecution which annihilated much of his family.
“I remember his tortured screams in the night,” reminisced Grant, visibly shaken. “I didn’t understand then, and I still don’t understand it. My son Daniel is 13 years old, so my father can still talk to him about the Holocaust, but this is the last generation who can hear first-hand about the horrors of that era.”
When asked if he thought there was sufficient education about the Holocaust in the UK among non-Jewish communities, Grant recalled how he had worn a black arm band on the eve of Holocaust Day (Yom Ha’Shoah) during a match between Chelsea and Liverpool FC.
“I was surprised to hear how little people here knew about the Holocaust,” he responded. “But we cannot forget, and must help survivors in any way we can.”
Grant, who is “looking for new challenges”, was introduced by Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor, who also stressed the importance of helping the remaining Holocaust survivors live in dignity; Meir Panim’s Israel director Racheli Evenboim and deputy director, Dr Shlomit Shuluv-Barkan.
Commenting on the event, Meir Panim UK director Gaby Blauer said: “It does prove a lot when so many people are prepared to turn up and help our cause, especially given the current economic climate.”
Entertainment was provided by singers Tally Koren and Anthony Wolfson; food by Israeli chef Yuda Galis.
Organized by the UK Branch of Meir Panim, an Israeli party - Music and dance with DJ Danny.
Venue: N20 NIGHT CLUB
All proceeds will go to an Israeli charity - Meir Panim which is helping families in need, and taking them out of poverty.

Cost: £10 per person. The N20 Nightclub in Whetstone, played host to Meir Panim’s Israeli party (25.2.09). 100 people attended the event and raised £1000 for Meir Panim’s programmes for Israeli children and families in need.
Burekas, Tsaziki, Baba Ganush and Humus is now on the menu thanks to the Israeli chef Yuda Galis. A sell-out group took part in the Cookery session in Hendon last week. £500 was raised for Meir Panim's food shopping card programme.
Each participant paid a minimum of £36 per person, an amount which can make a real difference to a needy family in Israel, who will be able to buy food for a whole month with a food shopping card.
“Meir Panim” distributes food shopping cards, resembling credit cards, which are used as a gift card at major food chain stores all over Israel. The card is worth £36 of groceries (excluding alcohol and cigarettes) each month.
This innovative project allows Meir Panim to provide food for needy individuals on a new level, while preserving their self respect, especially for those who are uncomfortable being seen accepting charity.
Yuda Galis, a world wide experienced Chef. He has worked in some of the world's top restaurants with leading Chefs. His talent and creativity coupled with his vast knowledge of French / Italian / Mediterranean and Israeli food.
More than 40 participants enjoyed a talk given at the end of October by former BBC "Dragon" Rachel Elnaugh on "The Credit Crunch and Other Business Nightmares", which raised over £700 for a charity to help Israel's poor families.
Sponsored by Bank Leumi UK plc and the first of its kind held by the Meir Panim organisation in London, the event was aimed at young professionals, businessmen and women and entrepreneurs.
A former participant on BBC's business television show, "The Dragon's Den," and one of the UK's high profile entrepreneurs, Rachel said she had a "place in her heart for organisations such as Meir Panim, which are trying to make people self sufficient and to take them out of poverty."
"Hitting really tough times can actually lead you to a path that is much better for you," she added, referring to her own experience. Rachel's business, Red Letter Days, went bankrupt after around ten years trading. But far from being negative, Rachel said: "As soon as I decided just to accept whatever was going to happen to me, it got easier."
Today, she advises small businesses on entrepreneurship and has recently published a book drawing from her own experiences.
Gabriel Blauer, Executive Director of UK Branch of Meir Panim said: "I'm extremely pleased with our first event in the UK, which inspired many young people who came to support us, especially in these difficult times. We are looking forward to seeing them and others at future events."
